Threshold amplitudes for transition to turbulence in a pipe
نویسندگان
چکیده
Although flow in a circular pipe is stable to infinitesimal perturbations, it can be excited to turbulence by finite perturbations whose minimal amplitude shrinks as R → ∞ (R = Reynolds number). Laboratory experiments have appeared to disagree with one another and with theoretical predictions about the dependence of this minimal amplitude on R, with published results ranging approximately from R−1/4 to R−3/2. Here it is shown that these discrepancies can be explained by the use of different definitions of amplitude by different authors. An attempt is made to convert the existing results to a uniform definition of amplitude, the nondimensionalized L2 definition common in the theoretical literature. Although subtleties in the physics raise some questions, agreement appears to be reached on a minimal amplitude that scales as R−3/2±0.3. Typeset using REVTEX

Pipe flow transition threshold following localized impulsive perturbations
A numerical study of the destabilizing effects of localized impulsive perturbations in pressuredriven Hagen-Poiseuille or pipe flow is presented. The numerics intend to ellucidate the intrinsic mechanisms of subcritical transition to turbulence in pipe flow by reproducing very recent experimental explorations carried out by Hof, Juel and Mullin [1], concluding that the minimum amplitude of a pe...

The results of an experimental investigation into the threshold boundary between laminar and disordered pipe flow are presented. Complex features have been uncovered using a highly refined experimental approach where an intermediate periodic state forms an integral part of the transition sequence. In accord with the suggestions produced by a numerical investigation, the boundary is found to be ...
متن کاملStreak breakdown instability in pipe Poiseuille flow
This work is devoted to the study of the stability of Hagen–Poiseuille flow or pipe flow. The analysis is focused on the streak breakdown process by which two-dimensional streamwise-independent finite amplitude perturbations transiently modulate the basic flow leading to a profile that contains saddle points and is linearly unstable with respect to very small streamwise-dependent perturbations....
متن کاملExperimental and theoretical progress in pipe flow transition.
There have been many investigations of the stability of Hagen-Poiseuille flow in the 125 years since Osborne Reynolds' famous experiments on the transition to turbulence in a pipe, and yet the pipe problem remains the focus of attention of much research. Here, we discuss recent results from experimental and numerical investigations obtained in this new century. Progress has been made on three f...
متن کاملCritical threshold in pipe flow transition.
This study provides a numerical characterization of the basin of attraction of the laminar Hagen-Poiseuille flow by measuring the minimal amplitude of a perturbation required to trigger transition. For pressure-driven pipe flow, the analysis presented here covers autonomous and impulsive scenarios where either the flow is perturbed with an initial disturbance with a well-defined norm or perturb...
